Job Description

Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) is recruiting talented professionals who want to contribute and make a difference in our southeast Michigan community!! SEMCA is a Michigan Works! Agency providing workforce development programs to residents in Wayne and Monroe counties, excluding the city of Detroit. This position is fully remote with occasional travel to attend meetings and/or conferences.

Hourly wage: $17/hour

Job Summary

The WIN Data & Research Intern/Assistant will be responsible for supporting WIN’s Communications Manager for Research and other WIN staff for several labor market data and research projects. This position offers the opportunity to work on research, data requests, other projects related to better data utilization by the Michigan talent system, and how the talent system interacts with the overall state and regional economy. This role will include assistance regarding a skills gap analysis and hirings-to-postings analysis to better understand the connection between online job ads and employer hiring. The WIN Data & Research Intern/Assistant will have the opportunity to work on an independent workforce- related research paper to be published through WIN.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Communications Manager and other WIN staff with data requests from partners
  • Work closely with WIN research team to produce a skills gap analysis and hirings-to-postings analysis
  • Assist WIN team with meeting preparation and data presentations
  • Produce a workforce-related research paper with guidance from WIN’s Senior Research Analysts
  • Assist with research initiatives through data collection, analysis, writing, editing, and presentations
  • Assist with outreach for completion of employer interviews, survey research, social network analysis, and various projects.
  • Participate in team meetings and strategy sessions
  • Lead data collection work for several of WIN’s cluster groups
  • Assist with posting relevant articles to WIN’s website and partner sites
  • Other tasks as assigned

Workplace Learning

The WIN Data and Research Intern/Assistant will:

  • Work closely with Communications Manager and other WIN staff to learn about data sources and how to extract data
  • Learn basic and mid-level statistical analysis skills
  • Receive guidance and feedback for independent workforce-related research project to be published with WIN
  • Experience working directly with stakeholders in workforce and talent development
  • Learn project budgeting
  • Gain experience writing for a diverse set of audiences and increase writing proficiency
  • Learn advanced Microsoft excel and other data management and analysis skills including creating information graphs
  • Participate in WIN training activities including but not limited to meeting facilitation, grant writing, and writing for communications

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a master’s degree in policy, economics, or a related field
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Microsoft office basics (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)
  • Basic Excel skills for data handling, including collecting, cleaning, and processing datasets.
  • Written communication skills
  • Economic intuition and reasoning skills
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of labor’s role in the economy
  • Reliable transportation to attend meetings in the metro-Detroit area (weekly)

Physical Demands

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials on an LCD screen and smartphone, hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person and over the telephone.
