Job Description
Location: The American University of Rome, Rome, Italy (Hybrid: In-Person & Remote) Hours: 20 hours per week, with flexibility for evenings and weekends Start Date: Immediate - initial 6-month contract About the Role The American University of Rome (AUR) is seeking an experienced and professional Freelance Communications & Public Liaison to help elevate the university’s public presence and community engagement. This unique part-time role blends creative journalistic writing with public relations and networking, representing AUR at key cultural and professional events in Rome and beyond. You will be responsible for producing high-quality articles, press releases, and stories that showcase the achievements and activities of AUR’s students, faculty, and community. In parallel, you’ll serve as an ambassador for the university, cultivating meaningful relationships with local and international stakeholders to further AUR’s mission and reputation. This role offers the opportunity to be part of an internationally focused academic community in the heart of Rome. You’ll have the opportunity to shape narratives, build networks, and contribute directly to the university’s mission of fostering global citizenship and academic excellence. Key Responsibilities Create engaging written content – articles, press releases, features, and interviews that highlight AUR’s achievements, academic programs, and events. Identify compelling storylines that resonate with media outlets, prospective students, and the wider community. Represent AUR at cultural and professional events – proactively building and maintaining networks within Rome’s Italian and expatriate communities. Develop and maintain relationships with local press, cultural organizations, educational institutions, and professional bodies. Act as a strategic voice for AUR, ensuring the university is increasingly represented in public and media spheres. Collaborate closely with AUR’s Marketing & Communications Director and the university’s senior leadership to align content and engagement with strategic goals. Requirements Proven track record as a seasoned journalist, PR professional, or writer with a strong portfolio of published works. Bilingual proficiency in Italian and English (written and spoken) is essential. Confident public speaker with a talent for networking and relationship building. Experience working with both Italian and international communities. Strong understanding of media landscapes and public relations best practices. Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and represent AUR in a professional and strategic manner. Social media savvy and comfortable using digital tools to amplify reach. Desirable Characteristics: Experience of working within higher education, particularly international or U.S. environments A well-established network of media and professional contacts in Rome and beyond will be considered a significant asset.
