My client a leading retailer with offices in Montague Gardens, Cape Town requires an experienced and qualified IT and Desktop Technician to join their team. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB The IT & Desktop Technician is responsible for providing technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance of hardware, software, and network systems to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime. This role includes installing, configuring, and upgrading computer systems, managing user access and security, and supporting end-users with IT-related issues. The technician will also assist with system updates, backups, and asset management while ensuring compliance with company IT policies and security protocols. REQUIREMENTS Grade 12 ESSENTIAL A certificate. At least 5 years experience in the IT industry, doing desktop & software support. Experience with a large Retail company will secure Drivers licence and willing to travel to stores Fluent in English & Afrikaans. Experience in and knowledge of MS SQL is a HUGE advantage Experience in and knowledge of Linux is a HUGE advantage. MCSE Certificate is an added advantage. Duties: Set-up and maintenance of applications - Software Support, setup, management and maintenance of Point of sale/Account management software (currently Trader) Configuring of new PCs for networking Fault finding related to network connection problems. Install new network peripherals (hubs, networks cards). Testing new equipment & systems. Implement & co-ordinate system updates and replacement of "old" versions. - Network printer setup and administration. Liaising with relevant 3rd parties towards the resolution of technical issues where applicable. Software management and maintenance. Desktop administration Fault finding on PCs. Replacing of hardware. Upgrading of hardware. Configuring of hardware. Installation of operating system. Installation of application software. Configuring of printers & shares. Build, re-build & repair workstations. Manage space on servers at branch-level. E-mail administration Administer mailbox accounts. Monitoring of NDRs for the company if required. Managing of distribution lists. Configurations on client computers. Monitor performance of e-mail system to ensure efficiency. Configuring of handheld devices for synchronization with exchange. Set-up and maintenance of Internet / Intranet Create internet/intranet sites. Maintain internet/intranet sites. Configure security levels on intranet sites. Create and update web pages regularly with new data. Virus protection Implement new virus protection solutions. Keep abreast of new virus outbreaks and notify users. Removal of viruses from desktops, servers and e-mail. User support / helpdesk Telephonic support to users. Call outs to local users. Assist users with certain projects (spreadsheets, presentations etc.). Occasional one on one training of users on certain matters. Remote desktop management tools. A/V Engineer Setting up of sound equipment for functions as required. Setting up of data projector equipment as required. Setting up of video equipment as required. Assessing requirements for bigger functions. Purchasing / Inventory control Purchasing, re-ordering, issuing and re-distribution of software. Capacity planning of hardware and software. Administration of hard/software. Placing orders. Obtaining asset numbers from Finance Dept. & labelling hardware. - Maintaining sale transaction records. Monitoring,evaluation, design & strategic focus Proposals, presentations & advice to management on IT developments. Planning & implementation of new systems. Ensuring networks and servers are fully operational at branch level. Monitoring network and server performance at branch level. Ensuring branch-level servers can be recovered in the event of failure. Conforming networks to specification and best practice. Technical reporting on the operation of systems . Documentation of Infrastructure & Security policy and procedures. Developing and maintaining network-support-related documentation. Monitoring of security events & ensuring compliance with Security policy. Designing, implementing & supporting active directory. Security & Compliance User access control beyond basic administration. Data security & privacy responsibilities. Compliance with IT security frameworks (e.g., POPIA, GDPR, or company policies). Escalation & Incident Management Logging and escalating unresolved IT issues. Collaborating with senior IT staff on critical failures. Documenting resolutions for future reference.
