Job Description
Overview Educational Aids/Technicians (CYP Assistants) work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well-cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. The CYP Assistant helps children develop social skills, make healthy choices, build self-help and school readiness skills, and explore the environment. Responsibilities Curriculum: Develops schedules and activity plans; ensures program plans and activities incorporate the observed needs of individual children and youth; implements activities and special events that meet physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs; prepares and implements program options for children and youth with special requirements; demonstrates and leads planned and spontaneous activities; models developmentally appropriate practice; promotes safety, fitness, health, and nutrition; helps arrange for and/or serve snacks or meals where applicable. Indoor and Outdoor Environment: Prepares, arranges, and maintains indoor/outdoor activity areas and materials; sets up displays; inventories equipment and replenishes damaged or depleted supplies; secures supplies, equipment, and facilities. Interactions and Relationships: Establishes a program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions with children, youth, and adults; interacts with participants using approved child guidance and youth development techniques. Supervision of Children and Youth: Provides care, supervision, and accountability for program participants in compliance with DoD, NAF components, and local policies; maintains control and safety of children and youth; supervises during daily activities, field trips, and special events; ensures departures with authorized persons per parental instructions; observes for illness, abuse, or neglect and reports as directed (mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services where required). Parent and Employee Communication: Interacts professionally with employees, parents, and installation personnel; provides daily verbal or written feedback to parents; participates in conferences with parents and employees. Assessment: Observes and documents developmental progression and concerns; uses information for planning; participates in program evaluation using designated tools and accreditation inputs. Compliance: Assists in achieving and maintaining DoD certification and national accreditation; ensures compliance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations; notifies supervisor of health, fire, and safety concerns. Additional Responsibilities: Collects, maintains, and reports program participation data; performs other related duties as assigned. Requirements and Conditions of Employment Must be 18 years of age or older. Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications/credentials required by Federal, State, and/or national accreditation bodies used by DoD CY programs. Pass all applicable records and background checks; undergo pre-employment and random drug testing (positive result or failure to test may affect eligibility). Pass a pre-employment medical examination, provide immunization evidence, and be free of communicable diseases; obtain appropriate immunizations. Physical ability to sustain walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 40 pounds. Selective Service registration (where applicable). Eligible candidates must possess required credentials or qualifications (e.g., No-Fee Passport, Sponsor’s Orders, etc.). If qualified at the lower level, promotion to higher levels may be possible upon meeting qualification requirements. Levels and KSAs Entry Level (CY-1702-01) Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written). Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to complete all Navy DoN training within the specified timeframe. Ability to promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers. Ability to work cooperatively as a team member. Intermediate Level (CY-1702-01) Six months of experience with children or youth in a CY setting. Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles. Ability to implement developmentally appropriate care and education. Ability to interpret a curriculum or activity plan. Ability to follow written instructions. Ability to plan, organize, and work cooperatively as a team; promote working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers. Target Level (CY-1702-02) One year of experience with children or youth in a CY setting. Knowledge of development principles to inform program response. Skill to implement developmentally appropriate principles and services for high-quality care and education. Skill to promote working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers; ability to work as a team. Verbal communication skills to provide basic program information and explain CYP processes and procedures. Education Must provide a copy of your high school diploma, GED, or college transcripts when you apply. Notes on Eligibility and Certifications Entry Level requires being 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent. Prior experience is preferred. Intermediate and Target levels require additional training and/or credentials as specified, including DoD training or a CDA/MSA credential or related degree as noted. If your degree has not been awarded, you must provide HS diploma or equivalent along with DoD competency-based training certificates or CDA/MSA credential when applicable. Additional Information Conditions of Employment: A positive drug test will affect eligibility. Incumbents must satisfactorily complete background checks (fingerprints, DoD/State checks, IRC, etc.) per DoD policy. Some positions may require probationary periods. Direct Deposit/EFt is required.
