Head of Research for Cross-scale Biology AI Human Technopole Head of Research for Cross-scale Biological AI APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: September 3, 2025. Human Technopole (HT) is an interdisciplinary life science research institute, created and supported by the Italian Government, with the aim of developing innovative strategies to improve human health. The Centre for Computational Biology focuses on developing new mathematical and computational approaches for the analysis and interpretation of biological data. Computational biology at HT combines AI and mechanistic modelling to address questions across biological scales, from molecules to populations. We launched a new programme within the Centre for Computational Biology, entitled Multimodal AI Across Scales. We seek an outstanding scientist to lead this initiative, drive a bold international research agenda, and shape the future of computational biology at HT. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to recruit research groups aligned with their vision and HT strategy. We particularly welcome applicants with experience in setting up international AI consortia, strong track record in AI for biomedical imaging and other data modalities, and a vision that embraces HT’s scientific diversity. HT provides cutting-edge infrastructure, including high-performance computing, central data storage, and core facilities. Key tasks and responsibilities Establish and lead a new AI research programme in the Centre for Computational Biology. Define and implement the scientific strategy of the Centre in alignment with HT’s mission and Strategic Plan. Identify expertise and lead recruitment of new Research Group Leaders. Coordinate and align activities across all Research Groups within the Centre. Promote interdisciplinary initiatives and manage Flagship Research Programmes (FRPs). Lead/participate in recruitment of scientific and technical staff with emphasis on excellence and diversity. Mentor Group Leaders and support the development of early-career researchers and staff. Oversee scientific operations and coordinate resource planning with Administration and Scientific Operations. Support decision-making on shared infrastructure, instrumentation, and space/resource allocation. Organise regular internal meetings to foster collaboration and address scientific and administrative matters. Identify and pursue competitive funding opportunities at national and international levels. Develop partnerships with academia, industry, and research organisations to enhance impact. Support organisation of scientific events and promote the Centre’s visibility in collaboration with Communications & External Relations and Scientific Training. Provide oversight on adoption of cutting-edge technologies and collaborate with Core Facilities and National Platforms. Implement regular review processes of the Centre’s activities and research output. Contribute to institutional decisions on research priorities and strategic positioning. Key requirements The candidate will have an outstanding track record in Computational Biology, especially in AI methods for life-science data analysis. Requirements include a proven track record as a senior group leader in AI method and tool development, scientific vision, leadership, ability to secure extramural funding, and experience in international consortia. Fluent English required. PhD in mathematics, physics, informatics, data science or related field. Expertise in AI for biological data processing with impact on a large biomedical community. Outstanding track record in Computational Biology. Proven scientific output in internationally visible venues. Successful experience in securing collaborative extramural funding. Fluent English (C1) – strong written and verbal communication skills. Organizational and social skills Strong leadership, communication, team-building, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to interact effectively with other teams to achieve common goals. Highly organized and meticulous work attitude. Ability to operate with transparency and foster an open, positive environment.
