Overview Description: Director of Human Resources, reports to Chief Strategy Officer, schedule Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm, location Venice, CA. Status: Full-Time, 40 hrs / wk, Exempt. Salary range: $100,000 - $105,000 Annually. This role requires driving eligibility with a driver position noted if applicable and reimbursement for cell phone use. About Us Safe Place for Youth (SPY) is the leading service provider for youth experiencing or at-risk of homelessness in West Los Angeles. Founded in 2011, our agency offers trauma-informed, low barrier programs that support young people in exiting the streets and achieving stability so that they can thrive, not just survive. Our continuum of care includes street outreach, drop-in services, health and wellness programming, case management, education and employment services, and housing programs. Role Summary The Director of Human Resources is responsible for managing and monitoring HR functions including employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, policy development and implementation, employment law compliance, payroll, benefits administration, leaves and terminations, performance reviews, and employee relations. This role requires a perceptive, proactive individual who can relate to all levels within the organization and will work closely with the Chief Strategy Officer to support SPY’s mission. What You’ll Do Oversee the human resources department and administer HR plans, procedures, and initiatives for all staff Implement trauma-informed organizational practices within human resources Communicate with management and employees on HR policies, procedures, laws, standards and government relations Ensure HR policies, procedures, and training programs are consistently administered, aligned with organizational goals, and compliant with professional and federal regulatory standards; monitor adherence and update SPY’s employee handbook annually Administer SPY compensation program and execute the performance evaluation process Maintain employee files and job descriptions; engage in audit processes Receive, manage, and respond to complaints and employee relations issues Negotiate and manage employee benefits plans, including claims resolution; support staff with benefits; communicate benefits information; and manage open enrollment Conduct recruitment for all positions, including temporary staff; manage internships; conduct new employee orientations; monitor employee development and lifecycle Collaborate with supervisors toward HR priorities Manage payroll bi-weekly implementation, ensuring accuracy, funding allocations, and timely disbursement of final paychecks Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations; update policies to maintain compliance Facilitate professional development, training, and certification for HR staff Represent the organization for unemployment claims Work with the Chief Strategy Officer on organizational matters including strategic planning, budget, employee engagement, staff development, and other development issues Complete regular reporting, including monthly outcomes Collaborate with Operations to ensure OSHA standards are met Collaborate with Finance to ensure accurate payroll and 403b administration Serve as the ADA and HIPAA compliance officer Other duties as assigned to support the mission Qualifications What You’ll Need Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Management or related field is strongly preferred; Master’s degree is preferred SHRM or PIHRA Certification preferred; California Law HR Specialty Credential preferred 4-5 years of experience coaching, training and developing talent is preferred Expertise in HR best practices and California laws required High level of confidentiality and integrity with sensitive matters At least 2 years of experience in the California non-profit sector preferred Experience developing policies and programs for employees with lived experience of homelessness Commitment to SPY’s mission, values, and culture; excellent communication skills Knowledge of government contract and grants management; ability to manage major projects Strong interpersonal and collaborative management skills; high ethical standards; diverse workplace commitment Ability to work in a diverse environment; impeccable editing and proofreading; attention to detail Must have reliable transportation and a valid California driver’s license with insurance Successfully pass a Live Scan background check and provide TB test/PPD within last 60 days Work Environment & Physical Requirements Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Occasional changes in environment (office or outdoors). Physical effort up to 15-20 pounds. Special Conditions Mandated Reporting Requirements: The position is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act. COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements: Proof of vaccination is required where applicable; boosters may be required; if not fully vaccinated, weekly testing may be necessary depending on program. Excessively poor driving records may disqualify. Notes All staff are considered introductory for the first three months. SPY reserves the right to extend the introductory period.
