EPIC an acronym for Encouraging Potential Inspiring Change has, in partnership with The City of Doncaster Council, developed an alternative learning provision to support small groups of young people (up to 8 young people per cohort split into 2 groups) who are often disengaged from education and have been/ are at risk of exclusion from mainstream school for challenging, anti-social and criminal behaviours. EPICs background in Youth Crime Prevention highlighted the correlation between young people who are excluded and those that enter the criminal justice system. Our young people are aged 10-16yrs. The project supports young people in our short-term provision, using experiential learning with a focus on intervention. The project is also supported by a Lead Teacher, Project Lead, Assistant Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist, and one other Learning Mentor. The EPIC Learning team work on a relationship-based practice model using a trauma informed approach. The project aims to prevent young people from being permanently excluded from mainstream school as well as prevent them from entering the criminal justice system and further offending. During the package of support provided, information will be gained for the young person to be re-integrated back into school as part of a bespoke transition plan. The Learning Mentors main roles within the project will be to support the Teacher in the classroom, be the key worker for a very small caseload of young people completing their assessment and 1:1 sessions, as well as jointly lead on the delivery of our youth crime intervention programme Think Forward/ Think Young and Safe along with the other Learning Mentor. This will include the planning and delivery of sessions either 1:1 or to small groups of up to 4 young people, ensuring that there is a high standard of learning in an innovative and engaging way. You will be expected to complete high-quality assessments, produce case-studies and ensure thorough daily records are kept via our recording systems all within required timescales. Our Learning Mentors need to have skills in engaging and building positive relationships with young people in a variety of different ways, be able to adapt plans to meet their needs, take instruction from others and have a calm approach. Enthusiasm, innovative ideas and a passion for improving the lives of young people is key. EPIC Learning provide a combination of assessments, therapeutic activities, educational development, intervention support and will support young people to achieve tangible outcomes - such as increasing their life skills, transforming their behaviour, and re-engaging with education. The successful candidate must have experience of working with young people who may present with highly challenging behaviours, which at times can be stressful. Our young people may have diagnosed or underlying additional needs so the right candidate would need to be prepared to work flexibly to meet the needs of young people and support information gathering.
