Job Description
Some of what you'll be doing: As a Journey-Level Laborer, you will perform construction laborer responsibilities throughout the Port of Seattle on Port properties. Under the direction of the Field Supervisor or/and lead for day-to-day field activities assigned to Port Construction Services (PCS) crews and work teams. You will maintain a safe work area for the work crew and public, to include but not limited to cones, barricades, dust control containments, and warning devices that directs traffic at work sites and activities are performed in a safe and efficient manner. You will work as part of a multi-craft PCS crew on small construction projects across all Port of Seattle properties (airport, seaport, marine), including interior, exterior, and grounds. You will perform excavation and support underground utility installations. You will support interior finish and carpentry work, including core drilling, jack hammering, and bushing. You will pour concrete, set mats, tie rebar, and level surfaces to grade. You will install and repair various types of fencing and gate systems. You will assist with trenching, rigging, shoring, and stormwater system maintenance and repairs, including storm drain structures, piping and ditches, catch basins, and treatment systems, and assist with digging, backfilling, and asphalt work. You will operate equipment such as plate compactors, compressors, and other general labor tools. You will work at heights to clean, repair, and install roofing, gutters, and similar systems using manlifts. You will ensure compliance with Port rules, safety regulations, and complete all required training. You will assist with incident reporting, assess environmental risks, and ensure compliance with hazmat regulations. Who you are: Experienced - You completed an approved Laborer apprenticeship program, or you have a combination of 5 years' experience in excavation, underground utilities installations, core and shell, interior finishes, clean-up, concrete, core drilling, asphalt, fence and gate installation, construction support, regulated materials, landscape maintenance, or traffic control. It is not required that you have experience in all these areas, just that you have a combination of at least 5 years. Educated - You possess a High School Diploma or GED. Desired - You are AHERA inspector certified. You are OSHA 30 certified. You are CESCL certified. You know how to use a smartphone for communication, photos, google maps. You are comfortable using a computer for email and for looking things up. Additionally, you have operational experience with a plate compactor, compressors, and other general laborer tools of the trade. Driving Port vehicles is required in order to travel locally to project sites. Knowledgeable - You can perform all journey-level Laborer work activities, familiar with all work-related safety codes, regulations, and requirements, can work at heights, over water, and in confined spaces, and can properly use rigging, personal safety equipment, and industry required tools. You have knowledge of construction means, methods and practices of your respective trade. Additionally, you are comfortable using a cell phone, email, and job tracking system to receive notifications of new work orders and/or requests. Customer Focused - You have a strong customer service mindset with both internal and external customers, modeling that behavior for the rest of the team and deliver excellent service under pressure during stressful/emergency situations. Safety Conscious - You are knowledgeable in Construction Safety best practices, particularly when digging around live utilities. You keep an eye out for various hazards and immediately correct unsafe conditions. Collaborative & Independent - You are able to work as part of a team and partner with staff to achieve results. You are also capable of working independently with little guidance to complete tasks. What else you need to know: Work Schedule/Environment - PCS primarily works a two-shift schedule. Day shift works Monday-Friday, 6:00am to 2:30pm (5x8's). Night shift works Monday night - Friday morning, 8:00pm to 6:30am (4x10's); amount of hours is not guaranteed. You will be required to work either shift as assigned based on business needs. With options for working holidays, weekends, a third shift, and emergencies. You will generally work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights, over the water, on and around piers, and/or in confined spaces. Washington State Residency Requirement - Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. Overtime - You are eligible for overtime pay in this role. Safety Requirements - You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Security Requirements - You must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance. You will also be required to access the Port of Seattle Police Department equipment, office locations, systems and/or vehicles. In compliance with Federal and State laws as the successful candidate, you will be required to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) criminal history background check. You will be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 90 days of hire and a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first 3 months of employment. Union Representation - This position is represented by the Laborers Union, Local 242, under a Port of Seattle Maintenance agreement. This agreement pays at 88% of union scale, and provides paid holidays, floater days, paid vacation, and sick leave, and other Union Benefits . Benefits/Pay - $45.34 hourly wage. In addition to wages for hours worked, you will receive 10 paid holidays, 3 paid floater days. $94,307.20/yr. This represents 2080 compensated hours (assuming available work, etc.) You will accumulate paid vacation days at 6.03 hours per pay period (approx. 19 days per year). Available for your use after you complete your first 180 days of employment. $200/yr safety shoe stipend, Shift premiums 10% swing, 15% Grave, OT (1.5), DT (2), Sick leave, jury duty, bereavement, development, paid paternal leave and training opportunities.
