Job Description

Job purpose Conducts technical analysis of product implementations, modifications and enhancements to product in accordance with specific customer specifications and implementations. Troubleshoots technical problems and issues, determines technical solution in accordance with product and customer specifications, and recommends actions to company or customer representatives for coordinative product solution. Assesses product needs in accordance with customer specifications. Conducts technical training and product briefing with customers, vendors and company representatives. Acts as local on-site representative to customer's organization. Duties and responsibilities Responsible for installation, calibration, operation and repair of electronic systems aboard the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer and R/V Laurence M. Gould. Troubleshoots and repairs, to the component level, instrumentation and electronic systems. All other duties as assigned. Qualifications US citizenship or permanent residence is required. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with two years of professional experience; or no experience required with a related Master's degree. Supervisor adequate skill level assessment may be accepted in lieu of professional experience requirement. US Merchant Marine Officers License or able-bodied Seaman document issued by United States Coast Guard desirable. Three to five years commercial sailing, previous experience on research vessels, or other applicable career experience. Background in ship operations, or marine operations in general. Preference given to individuals with academic research vessel experience. Ability to speak and read Spanish a strong plus. One year supervisory experience required. Previous experience working in Antarctica is required. Must have experience working on research vessels. Competencies Technical Capacity. Organizational Skills. Strategic Thinking. Problem Solving/Analysis. Physical requirements The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action. Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedures. Position requires lifting of at least 40 lbs and strenuous physical activity both indoors and outdoors. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Position Expectations The standard work schedule for this position is 84 hours per week. (Monday through Sunday, 12 hours per day.) Position will be located on a research vessel. Contract duration would be for one year, renewable each year, with periodic cruises throughout the year as scheduled by the tasking manager.
