Job Description

Biomedical Scientist Reed is working in partnership with a leading laboratory to recruit a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist specialising in histopathology. This temporary position offers potential for extension or permanency. We are looking for candidates who are available to start immediately or as soon as possible. The role is integral to providing high-quality histopathology services, involving comprehensive analytical testing and processing of biological samples. Day-to-day of the role: Undertake technical work required for clinical services, including clinical specimen preparation and dissection under guidelines from The Royal College of Pathologists. Prioritise specimens received in the laboratory using histological knowledge. Provide in and out of hours technical service for urgent biopsy specimens. Handle all aspects of routine diagnostic histology including specimen dissection, paraffin embedding, microtomy, immunohistochemistry, special stains, and internal quality control. Proficiently use all laboratory instruments, perform routine maintenance, and troubleshoot equipment issues. Train colleagues in histology procedures as part of our comprehensive training programme. Participate in External Quality Assessment schemes. Manage entry of confidential patient data on LIMS, prepare pathological reports, and communicate findings to clinicians. Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures related to confidentiality, health and safety, COSHH, infection control, and local safety rules. Maintain standards for handling clinical specimens in accordance with ISO 15189 and ensure compliance with the Human Tissue Act. Required Skills & Qualifications: BSc or equivalent in a biological discipline. Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Practical experience in a pathology laboratory, specifically in histopathology. Proficient histology laboratory bench skills and ability to maintain good laboratory records. Ability to organise and prioritise own workload. Computer literacy, including proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and database management. Experience working in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory. Understanding of Health and Safety Regulations, human tissue governance, and digital pathology. Excellent communication skills.
