Principal Consultant Private Markets Decarbonization & Energy Transition Investing Advisor

We are committed to supporting our Private Equity clients in their efforts to decarbonize their portfolio companies, creating value and investing in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our private markets team is currently experiencing significant growth while servicing an existing large base of private equity infrastructure investor clients. Consultants in the Decarbonization & Energy Transition Investing team work on a wide range of pioneering strategic and operational decarbonization and target setting projects at investor and portfolio company levels for private markets investor clients. We are looking for a Principal Consultant to join our EMEA-wide business. This role will partner across ERM’s industry teams and lines of business to develop value-creating ‘Investment Grade’ decarbonization plans that meet the needs of portfolio companies and General Partner goals, investment outcomes, and programs, which can be rapidly implemented. The role will be based in Italy, but we offer flexible working arrangements. The Role : The Principal Consultant will capitalize on existing client relationships and build new ones within the private markets’ investor space. Internally, you will provide leadership that engages and motivates staff and contributes to ERM’s delivery of value-led and implementation projects. Responsibilities : Developing strategies to pursue and win new business opportunities, resulting in significant revenue growth. Leading origination and delivery of decarbonization projects, working with clients’ ESG, climate, investment, and operating teams to develop decarbonization & energy transition fund plans & programs, measure and improve against climate metrics & targets, and prepare for exits. Designing and executing ‘Investment Grade’ decarbonization plans for investments, ensuring alignment with broader portfolio and firm-level ESG and energy transition goals. Leading multidisciplinary teams across ERM’s sustainable energy solutions, M&A, digital, and corporate sustainability & climate change groups. Providing expert guidance to translate decarbonization initiatives into value-creating business models for long-term sustainability. Leading energy transition efforts during the diligence lifecycle to increase value and reduce operational risks, and providing post-investment decarbonization recommendations. About you : Fluent in both English and Italian. Experience in delivering ‘investment grade’ decarbonization plans (board-ready, fully costed, with detailed ROI and MACC analysis). Deep understanding of building comprehensive plans that go beyond energy savings to include business value, market positioning, and cost reductions. Experience managing decarbonization programs within private equity and infrastructure contexts, understanding their targets and broader investment processes. Knowledge of energy efficiency, renewable procurement, low carbon solutions, industrial decarbonization, and sustainable value chain initiatives. In-depth knowledge of private equity and infrastructure investors, and experience guiding senior management on GHG inventories, decarbonization roadmaps, and net zero targets. Familiarity with energy transition investing, Science Based Targets, impact management, life cycle assessments, Scope 3 abatement programs, and engagement with private markets investors across sectors. Knowledge of standards like TCFD, SBTi, LEED, BREEAM, GHG protocol, IRIS, and the Operating Principles for Impact Management is beneficial. Consulting background is preferred but not required.
