You will need to be a quick learner and be able to develop an expert knowledge of cement chemistry through reading scientific reports and literature. You will independently plan, design and resource projects across multiple workstreams in our chemistry laboratories, in line with regulations. You will conduct your own experimental programmes to address specific scientific questions with meticulous precision and accuracy and demonstrate excellent time management skills. You will be responsible for compiling detailed reports from your activities and critically assess your results to advance the current state-of-the-art knowledge of cement and concrete chemistry. You will establish and evaluate informative trends on the properties and long-term performance of cement-based materials, which will contribute to C4C’s pioneering role in the decarbonisation of the concrete industry. Roles & Responsibilities: As a Junior Chemist at Concrete4Change (C4C), you will play a pivotal role in developing novel technologies, contributing directly to the development and industrial trial of innovative CO2 mineralisation technologies. Your responsibilities will include: Chemical synthesis and formulation of new products to meet industrial performance and sustainability standards Developing new methodologies for the analysis and characterisation of cementitious materials Performing detailed chemical characterisation and testing using the following techniques: FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, GC-MS, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), isothermal calorimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), microscopy (TEM and SEM), X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) Documenting results, interpreting data and reporting findings to the R&D team Assisting in producing chemical formulations for industrial trials with leading concrete manufacturers Maintaining a safe working environment by adhering to HSE regulations and company safety protocols Contributing ideas to the R&D team to explore innovative chemical approaches for developing new technologies, and improving existing processes Troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment This position represents a significant progress opportunity in a fast-growing team. You will be part of the core building blocks of C4C, directly contributing to the accelerating growth of our company. Applicant attributes (please provide clear evidence of each in your application) Essential: PhD in Chemistry or Chemistry-related discipline MSc (ideally 1st Class) or equivalent in Chemistry from a European, UK, US or Canadian University which is ranked in the global top 50 Proven track record of demonstrating initiative and achievement, recognised as outstanding within your cohort Experience in method development of a new characterisation or analytical technique Proficiency in laboratory techniques and procedures including knowledge of synthesis, characterisation, testing of materials properties Comprehensive experience of material characterisation in at least three of the following methods: Powder X-Ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, TGA analysis, Isothermal calorimetry, Gas chromatography, Ion chromatography, Particle size analysis, BET analysis, Electron microscopy, NMR (heteronuclear) spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy Ability to work independently and to design and conduct experiments to answer complex scientific problems Ability to review and critically analyse scientific literature (i.e. perform literature reviews) Ability to follow good laboratory practice and compliance with HSE guidelines Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to clearly and concisely summarise key results in scientific reports Experience in handling and manipulating large datasets; ability to correlate analytical data from a wide variety of techniques (TGA, XRD etc.) with the properties of a material Ability to write and develop health and safety documentation including risk assessments, COSHH forms, and SOPs Excellent laboratory skills, sample preparation, and chemical synthesis Experience with analytical chemistry for the characterisation of chemicals or materials (e.g. spectroscopy, titrations, chromatography, X-ray techniques) Desirable Experience in scientific graphing software such as Origin, R, Matplotlib, Veuze Experience with thermodynamic modelling software such as PHREEQC or GEMS. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of inorganic materials chemistry/chemical mineralogy.
