Job overview Applications for this post are invited from Clinical Scientists with an appetite to address the challenges of service growth and improvement, underpinned by experience in Radiation Protection, Diagnostic Radiology and Quality Assurance. As a member of the Radiology Physics Group the post holder will be part of Diagnostic Radiology Sub-group and delivering high quality Radiation Protection, Quality Assurance and scientific support services to Radiology departments within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and other NHS and commercial organisations within South Yorkshire and beyond. The focus of this post is to support the delivery of efficient, high-quality Radiation Protection, Quality Assurance and leading-edge imaging by enabling development of specific software across the Radiology Physics Section to address the growth and development of imaging modalities. This will require participation in Group services to support clinical developments. We require applicants who can rise to the challenge of delivering a multisite/multi-customer service. Support for research and development programs and involvement in teaching and training will be expected. The Group is actively involved in quality assurance, clinical service development and research across modalities. Main duties of the job To support the appointed Radiation Protection Advisers as appropriate in the provision of quality assured radiation protection services for both ionising radiations across an extensive customer base, to include NHS Trusts, private institutions, educational premises and commercial organisations. To provide radiation protection advice to service purchasers, traceable to a Radiation Protection Adviser or Medical Physics Expert, for ionising radiations. To provide physics support to technical staff in the provision of quality assured radiation protection services. Applications are invited from Clinical Scientists who have completed the Scientific Training Program and are accredited with the HCPC or are close to completing and registering with the HCPC or can demonstrate equivalent experience. Candidates with less experience, who are not yet registered with the HCPC, may be appointed at a lower grade until registration is achieved. Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 6 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 7. Person specification Qualifications/Training Essential criteria • (Band 6 & 7) Honours degree in Physical Science 1st, 2(i), 2(ii) level or equivalent • (Band 6 & 7) Postgraduate degree in Medical Physics or relevant subject area • (Band 7) Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a clinical scientist Desirable criteria • (Band 6) Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a clinical scientist Experience Essential criteria • (Band 6 & 7) Diagnostic Radiology Physics, including the direct provision of clinical services, with a good track record of scientific activity and proven ability • (Band 6 & 7) Evidence of highly developed specialist training and practical experience in the use and testing of diagnostic radiology equipment, (including digital mammography, CT scanners, interventional fluoroscopy equipment, DR and CR imaging systems etc.) specialist test and measurement phantoms and dosimetry equipment calibration. • (Band 7) Understanding of the legislation, standards and guidelines relevant to the practice of Diagnostic Radiology • (Band 7) Awareness of clinical governance and its relevance to Diagnostic Radiology Desirable criteria • (Band 7) Experience in Diagnostic and Radiation Protection sufficient to satisfy the requirements for Corporate Membership of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. • (Band 6 & 7) Experience in clinical audit processes • (Band 6 & 7) Experience in research resulting in presentation of results via written scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and oral presentation at approved scientific meetings • (Band 6 & 7) Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from the use of radiation in diagnostic radiology • (Band 6 & 7) Evidence of scientific activity and proven ability to work in a medical imaging environment across many sites. • (Band 6 & 7) Experience in staff training and teaching on formal courses • (Band 6 & 7) Experience in teaching and training to a wide range of professional groups within and beyond the directorate. • (Band 6) Diagnostic Radiology Physics, including the direct provision of clinical services, with a good track record of scientific activity and proven ability • (Band 6) Understanding of the legislation, standards and guidelines relevant to the practice of Diagnostic Radiology • (Band 6) Experience in Diagnostic and Radiation Protection sufficient to satisfy the requirements for Corporate Membership of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.
