Job overview We are looking to appoint to a whole time Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers. Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues. Main duties of the job The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of anaesthetic services to the Trust. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provide safe, evidence-based medicine. 2. Pursue continuous improvement in the quality of care that we provide. 3. Ensure we work to the PROUD values, with the patient at the heart of what we do. 4. Provide an outstanding environment for our junior doctors to train. 5. Maintain skills and update knowledge base meeting the Continuing Education and Professional Development requirements of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. 6. Actively participate in the QI and audit ambitions of the Department. 7. Participate in the on-call rota at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. 8. Be prepared to work on all sites where elective surgical work is undertaken. The majority of this takes place at RHH and NGH. Lists will only be on one site on a given day. 9. The successful candidate would inevitably have responsibility for resource utilisation and would be expected to be aware of and take part in the Directorate business planning process which governs new developments. Some flexibility within duties dependent on the exigencies of service need will be expected from the appointee. The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria • Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practise. • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent. • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview. If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Desirable criteria • MD or PhD or equivalent • Full accreditation in transoesophageal echocardiography (BSE or EACVI/EACTAIC) • FFICM or EDIC • Accreditation in focused TTE Research Essential criteria • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate. Desirable criteria • Publications in Peer reviewed journals. • Ideas for future research whilst in post. Teaching and Training Essential criteria • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels Desirable criteria • To have the ability and willingness to teach at all levels and to all groups of staff. Continuous Professional Development Essential criteria • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months Desirable criteria • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio Management and administration Essential criteria • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management Personal Attributes Essential criteria • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values • Good oral and written communication skills • The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC’ good medical practice (2013). Clinical Governance and Audit Essential criteria • Experience in performing clinical audit Desirable criteria • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project Clinical Experience Essential criteria • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in the specialty covered by the post. • Appropriate training and experience in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care • Ability to perform perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography • Experience in other aspects of patient care, eg ICM, Pre-Op Assessment, Acute Pain, PACU
