Job Description Job Description Position: Middle School Social Studies Department: Middle School Location: Milton Academy Campus, Milton, MA Hours: Full-time with the flexibility to work nights and weekends FLSA: Exempt Classification: Faculty (Academic Year) Milton Academy is an independent college preparatory K–12 school, boarding and day in grades 9–12, located just outside of Boston. At Milton, we prepare students to partner with their future communities to create a more just world, and to have the courage to speak up and live by our motto, “Dare to be true.” Summary of Position: The Middle School Social Studies teacher fosters a dynamic and inclusive learning environment focused on innovative teaching practices and student engagement. The individual is also expected to actively support students, create a positive classroom environment, and adjust teaching methods to support diverse learning styles as needed. This position primarily involves providing students with the following skills and habits of mind: the ability to evaluate evidence, make persuasive, evidence-based arguments in written and verbal contexts, and problem-solve collaboratively and creatively. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Teaching Teach four sections of middle school social studies (grade level to be determined) Design, plan, and implement student-centered lessons that demonstrate a deep understanding of the academic discipline, research-driven pedagogy, anti-bias and anti-oppression teaching practices, and alignment with departmental learning objectives Collaborate with department members and Dean of Teaching and Learning Collaborate with grade-level team members across disciplines to design and deliver innovative cross-curricular learning opportunities for students Informally and formally assess and provide feedback on student learning, behavior, and social-emotional development at regular intervals Communicate clearly, effectively, and on a regular basis with students, families, and colleagues both formally and informally. Incorporate feedback and reflection to further develop teaching and learning and curriculum development into daily practice. Other Middle School Responsibilities All middle school employees are expected to attend morning assemblies and advisories, faculty and staff meetings, grade-level meetings, departmental meetings, and professional development. All Middle School employees are expected to be ready to welcome students into our space at 8:00 a.m. and, in this role, to remain on campus until 4:00 p.m. A variety of community responsibilities are also an essential component of our program. All middle school employees are responsible for: Weekly lunch supervision Weekly study hall supervision Facilitation of one semester-long activity Supervision to be received: Supervised by the Middle School Principal Supervision to be exercised: None. Education/Certification/Licensure Required: A bachelor’s degree in history or a related field Preferred: A master’s degree in history Experience Required: A minimum of three years of proven experience in teaching at the middle school level Preferred: Experience working in an independent middle school school Competencies Required: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated computer expertise including GoogleSuite, Microsoft word, and Adobe. Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies. Understanding of confidentiality and related issues. Receptive to supervision and professional development. Desire to be a part of a dynamic educational community. Physical Abilities Required: Must be able to work at a computer for up to 8 hours each day in conjunction with OSHA requirements. Must be able to teach in a classroom setting and use relevant instructional technology. Must be able to move around the Milton Academy campus without restriction.
