Optical Network Engineer – no experience required We are looking for a recent graduate with an interest in networking and emerging optical technologies, eager to apply their skills and contribute to the world of research and the Italian academic community. Rete GARR is a fiber optic infrastructure connecting Italy, utilizing advanced communication technologies. With a network spanning about 20,000 km, reaching around 3 million users, and connecting over 1,000 sites across Italy, we are a reference point for research and innovation. Role: Optical Network Engineer (18-month fixed-term contract with the possibility of subsequent conversion to permanent) Location: Rome (San Lorenzo area) Main activities: Design, development, and management of network infrastructure Analysis and technological innovation in optical networks Testing and commissioning of systems and equipment Support in delivery activities Development and integration of automation tools Evaluation of new technological solutions Training and support: Personalized training programs (classroom courses, e-learning, workshops, webinars) to develop personal and professional skills Training on GARR network architecture and its components (optical layer, packet layer, equipment) Sharing of values, mission, and evolution of the GARR network Training on internal processes and work tools Deepening emerging optical technologies such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Fiber Sensing Hands-on skills in large-scale transmission networks, focusing on WDM, Open Line Systems, DCI (Data Center Interconnection), and SDN Knowledge of design elements and architecture of optical transport networks Experience in designing and managing fiber optic infrastructure and network PoPs Analysis and troubleshooting skills for optimizing optical transport networks Familiarity with optical communication technologies from leading vendors Basic knowledge of packet/IP networks and TCP/IP protocols for a comprehensive understanding of network infrastructure Practical skills in network automation development and programming using Python, Ansible, and Kubernetes Benefits of GARR: 7.00 euro meal vouchers Full coverage health insurance Continuous training and professional development opportunities Hybrid working mode (6 days of smartworking per month) after the first 6 months Flexible working hours Innovative and international working environment Motivated and supportive team Tools and support for professional growth and success Opportunity to make a difference with innovative ideas and solutions Participation in innovative projects with a positive impact on Italy and Europe's research and education community Inclusive, collaborative, and stimulating work environment where every voice is valued Mandatory requirements: Master's degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, data science, or equivalent Italian language proficiency (C2 level) English language proficiency (B2 level) Please send your CV with authorization for data processing as per Legislative Decree No. 196/2003.
