Job Description

About the Workshop Our steel fabrication workshop specializes in the design and build of heavy-steel structures for the maritime, offshore, and wider energy sectors. You’ll join a hands-on environment where precision, quality, and safety are paramount—working on everything from large lifting frames to custom process skids and access platforms. Role Overview As a Trainee Production Engineer, you’ll spend your first six months learning every aspect of our shop-floor operations—then step up as a Junior Production Engineer to lead tasks and small teams. Key Responsibilities (Trainee Phase) Production planning support: Assist in scheduling fabrication jobs and tracking progress against timelines. Drawing interpretation: Read and understand 2D and 3D fabrication drawings (AutoCAD, Inventor). Shop-floor coordination: Shadow senior engineers during cutting, drilling, welding, assembly, and surface treatment. Material management & handling: Help receive, inspect, store, and issue steel sections, plates, and consumables. Site management support: Assist in organizing on-site setups for mock-ups, trial assemblies, and client visits. Crane management support: Observe rigging plans, crane lift charts, and assist with daily crane checks and load-planning. Quality assurance: Help conduct dimensional checks, welding inspections, and record non-conformances. Data management: Maintain daily production logs, material-consumption reports, and time sheets. Safety compliance: Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and ensure PPE/procedures are followed. Continuous improvement: Observe bottlenecks, suggest minor process tweaks, and support root-cause analysis of production issues. Transition to Junior Production Engineer After demonstrating competency in the trainee tasks, you will: Own production jobs: Lead planning and execution of fabrication sequences end-to-end. Coordinate sub-teams: Supervise welders, fitters, riggers, and subcontractors on shop-floor and site. Material management & logistics: Manage stock levels, coordinate deliveries, and optimize handling workflows. Site management: Plan and oversee on-site assembly, mock-up installations, and client-witnessed tests. Crane operations: Review lift plans, liaise with crane operators, ensure lifts comply with weights, radii, and safety regulations. Optimize workflow: Identify and implement efficiencies in material handling, workshop layout, and site setups. Uphold standards: Ensure all work meets DNV, ISO and client-specific quality requirements. Mentor new trainees: Share your hands-on learning with incoming team members. What We’re Looking For Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline). Experience: Fresh graduates or up to 1 year in a manufacturing/fabrication setting. Technical skills: Basic proficiency in AutoCAD or similar CAD tools Familiarity with steel fabrication processes (cutting, welding, NDT) Comfortable with MS Office (Excel for reporting) Mindset & soft skills: Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality Team-oriented with clear, concise communication Proactive problem-solver who isn’t afraid to get hands dirty Safety-first attitude Training & Development Structured mentorship: Paired with a Senior Production Engineer for daily coaching. Rotations: Exposure across cutting, welding, assembly, finishing, material stores, site setups, and crane ops. Standards immersion: Guided learning on maritime/offshore codes (DNV, ISO) and shop best practices. Progress reviews: Formal check-ins at 3- and 6-month milestones, with feedback and goal-setting. Career Path Months 1–6: Trainee Production Engineer—build core skills and shop-floor know-how Month 7 onward: Junior Production Engineer—own production jobs, manage materials/site/crane ops, lead small teams Future growth: Opportunity to advance into Production Lead or Project Engineer roles as the workshop scales Ready to build something big? Send your CV and a brief cover letter highlighting any fabrication or hands-on experience to hrfusie-engineers.com We’re excited to see what you’ll create with us.
