Institute for Defense Analyses

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates three Federally-Funded Research and Development Centers serving the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Defense Office of Test and Evaluation, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other Federal Agencies.

We provide our clients with research, studies, and evaluations on issues of national importance relating to the acquisition process by which the services purchase weapons systems. We are funded by the non-service elements within the Department of Defense, so that we can address issues which cut across service lines, and can study service programs without the appearance of a conflict of interest. We also support the Executive Office with studies on topics important to the White House policy makers.

Our role is to provide a reliable source of research, technical evaluations, and policy oriented studies which are independent of outside influences. However, our purpose is to stress the technical aspects of issues which have policy implications. While we are not usually involved with scientific research in the traditional laboratory sense, our work is mostly theoretical and computational research. As a result, we desire to attract individuals who have a past record of successful research. We find that technical competence is extremely important in our ability to address system level studies. Individuals with broad technical interests who are willing to consider non-traditional positions should find a career at IDA of interest. We have a history of developing engineering, mathematical and physical scientists into defense analysts.

And for our summer interns we provide an opportunity to try this type of career, and at the same time, to sample the many wonderful sights and sounds of our nation's capital.
