United States Senator for the District of Columbia
Leglislative and Public Policy Internship
Job Location: Washington - Washington, DC, United States
Job Description:
Several positions for Legislative Interns are currently available in the Office of the United States Senator for the District of Columbia.
Duties of the Legislative and Public Policy interns include the monitoring and analysis of pending legislation and public policy initiatives. The intern will work in the office of U.S. Senator Paul Strauss, the District of Columbia's Senior elected "shadow" U.S. Senator. The intern will attend proceedings of the United States Senate and it's committees, as well as meetings of the US House of Representatives, the elected Council of the District of Columbia and other governmental organizations. Specific responsibilities include the preparation of testimony before Congressional Committees, the drafting of Press Releases and position statements, and opportunities to represent the office at public gatherings and media events.
First elected in 1996, Senator Strauss is a progressive Democrat who was re-elected in 2002, and in the Democratic nominee for Re-Election this year. Senator Strauss was an automatic Superdelegate to the 2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. He has endorsed Senator Barack Obama. This will be a unique opportunity to observe the Presidential nomination process first hand. Interns may also get the opportunity to volunteer with the Senator's own re-election campaign this fall.
This internship is unpaid, but includes substantial responsibilities. If you want the Capitol Hill experience, but want to do more than just make copies or open mail, this is the office for you.
Job Requirements:
Varies in accordance with specific position sought; see details above. Candidates must be highly motivated, and prepared to work long hours.
