United States Senator for the District of Columbia

Public Policy and Legislative Intern

Job Location: Washington DC - Capitol Hill, DC, United States

Job Description:

Several positions for Legislative Interns are currently available in the Office of the United States Senator for the District of Columbia.

Duties of the Legislative and Public Policy interns include the monitoring and analysis of pending legislation and public policy initiatives.

The intern will work in the office of U.S. Senator Paul Strauss, the District of Columbia's elected Senior "shadow" U.S. Senator. The intern will attend proceedings of the United States Senate and it's committees, as well as meetings of the US House of Representatives, the elected Council of the District of Columbia and other governmental organizations.

Specific responsibilities include the preparation of testimony before Congressional Committees, the drafting of Press Releases and position statements, and opportunities to represent the office at public gatherings and media events.

First elected in 1996, Senator Strauss is a progressive Democrat who was re-elected in 2002. Pursuant to DNC Rules, Senator Strauss was an automatic SUPERDELEGATE to the 2008 Democratic National Convention to be held this Summer in Denver, Colorado. He has endosed Barack Obama. Interns may also get to volunteer for the Senator's own re-election campaign this fall, as well as opportunities to assist the Senator as he campaigns for the National Democratic ticket.

This internship is unpaid, but includes substantial responsibilities. If you want the Capitol Hill experience, but want to do more than just make copies or open mail, this is the office for you.

Job Requirements:

Applicants should be strongly motivated and willing to endure a quick changing, difficult to predict schedule. Long hours are not uncommon. Responsibilities will be commensurate with prior experience.

How To Apply:

Please send a resume, with a cover letter indicating the specific dates you are available and wish to be considered for. This information may be sent to the contact information below.
