Job Description:

Several positions for Legislative Interns are currently available in the Office of the United States Senator for the District of Columbia.

Duties of the Legislative and Public Policy interns include the monitoring and analysis of pending legislation and public policy initiatives.

The intern will work in the office of U.S. Senator Paul Strauss, the District of Columbia's elected Senior "shadow" U.S. Senator. The intern will attend proceedings of the United States Senate and it's committees, as well as meetings of the US House of Representatives, the elected Council of the District of Columbia and other governmental organizations.

Specific responsibilities include the preparation of testimony before Congressional Committees, the drafting of Press Releases and position statements, and opportunities to represent the office at public gatherings and media events.

First elected in 1996, Senator Strauss is a progressive Democrat who was re-elected in 2002, and 2008 with over 80% of the vote. Pursuant to DNC Rules, Senator Strauss was an automatic SUPERDELEGATE to the 2008 Democratic National Convention that was held this Summer in Denver, Colorado. He had endosed Barack Obama.

This internship is unpaid, but includes substantial responsibilities. If you want the Capitol Hill experience, but want to do more than just make copies or open mail, this is the office for you.
